SENSE-GDD: A Satellite-Derived Temperature Monitoring Service to Provide Growing Degree Days

نویسندگان

چکیده

A new satellite-enabled interoperable service has been developed to provide high spatiotemporal and continuous time series of Growing Degree Days (GDDs) at the field. The GDDs are calculated from MSG-SEVIRI data acquired by EUMETCast station operated IAASARS/NOA downscaled on-the-fly increase initial coarse spatial resolution original 4–5 km 1 km. performance SENSE-GDD, in deriving reliable GDD timeseries dates very close key phenological stages, is assessed using situ air temperature measurements weather stations installed Gerovassiliou Estate vineyard Epanomi (Northern Greece) an apple orchard Agia (Central Greece). Budburst, pollination, start veraison selected as stages for vineyards, whilst budburst pollination orchard. assessment shows that SENSE-GDD provided uninterrupted accurate both crop types. distinct feature proposed can support decisions non-instrumented fields a cost-effective way, paving way its extended operational use agriculture.

Determining suitable time for exploitation/ grazing of rangeland plants using growing degree days (GDD) model

One of the key principles in rangeland management is determination of suitable times for exploitation and grazing of rangeland plants in summer and winter pasturelands. This determination of time not only prevents degradation of plant species, but also leads to optimal usage of plant yield. Multiple factors affect plant phenology among which temperature regime has the highest effect on plant de...

Growing degree-days: one equation, two interpretations

Heat units, expressed in growing degree-days (GDD), are frequently used to describe the timing of biological processes. The basic equation used is GDD = [(T,,, + TM,,)/2] T,,,,, where T, and T,,, are daily maximum and minimum air temperature, respectively, and T,, is the base temperature. Two methods of interpreting this equation for calculating GDD are: (1) if the daily mean temperature is les...

Can Growing Degree Days and Photoperiod Predict Spring Wheat Phenology?

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) production in the rainfed area of Pothwar Pakistan is extremely vulnerable to high temperature. The expected increase in temperature due to global warming should result in shorter crop life cycles, and thus lower biomass and grain yield. Two major factors control wheat phenological development: temperature and photoperiod. To evaluate wheat development in response to t...

Do growing degree days predict phenology across butterfly species?

Global climate change is causing shifts in phenology across multiple species. We use a geographically and temporally extensive data set of butterfly abundance across the state of Ohio to ask whether phenological change can be predicted from climatological data. Our focus is on growing degree days (GDD), a commonly used measure of thermal accumulation, as the mechanistic link between climate cha...

Estimating the Growing Degree Days in the Northwest of Iran based on Climate Change Models

The purpose of this study is predicting climate changes and investigating the effect of probable climate change on the growing degree-days in the northwest of Iran. For this purpose the climatic data of seven synoptic stations during a 25 years period (1985-2009) was collected including Oroomieh, Tabriz, Zanjan, Sanandaj, Ghazvin, Kermanshah, and Hamedan were used as the base period and thus te...
